Banana Chocolate Cake

This is a family favourite. With 3 boys to fill up (one loves chocolate cake, the others banana), it does the job in one easy mixture and they all love it. It can easily be doubled and has been used on numerous occasions for ‘birthday cakes’.

I ice it with a simple chocolate icing.

  • Prep time: 20 mins
  • Cook time: 40 mins
  • Finished in: 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 100g butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup plain yoghurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • 1 1/2 cups self raising flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon bakins soda
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Method

Preheat oven to 180 C.   Grease and line a 22cm cake pan.
Beat together butter and sugar, add egg and mix well. Mix in yoghurt, vanilla and then banana,
Dissolve baking soda in the hot water.
Add the sifted dry ingredients and then the baking soda mixture.
Pour the mixture into the prepared pan.
Bake for 30-40 minutes until cake tests cooked.

  5. My kids love this cake. I had no plain yoghurt though, so I used chocolate yoghurt.

    Wendy, In the method you didnt mention when to add the vanilla essence, so I added it to the creamed butter and sugar.mixture.

  7. This is an amazingly moist cake. I added more cocoa and slightly undercooked, was like a mud cake. The banana keeps it lovely and moist with out it tasting more like banana than chocolate.

  14. Great recipe, nice and moist. I did not have any yoghurt on hand so I replaced this with buttermilk that i make myself. Thanks for the great recipe will be one of my favourites

  17. I made this cake last weekend for my son and his flatties. Later that evening I got a text saying “bloodly good cake”. Now making it for my neighbour in return for colostrum for motherless lambs.

  18. I made these into 12 regular muffins and baked for 20 mins. They were amazing – moist, moreish and the kids loved them. I put a thin layer of nutella on top for decoration which was indeed the icing on the cake. Will recommend and definitely make again.
