Join me on an unforgettable culinary adventure through Japan – a feast for both the palate and the soul. While this tour is designed with food lovers in mind, we’ll also of course visit iconic sites and scenic landscapes that make Japan so captivating. From the spiritual serenity of Miyajima to the timeless charm of Kyoto, the elegance of Kanazawa, and the vibrant energy of Tokyo, we’ll explore some of the country’s most stunning and iconic destinations.
Not Included
Day 1 Sunday 9th May Arrival Tokyo (approx 6pm arrival Narita if flying Air NZ from Akl)
Narita to hotel by train and then an 8 minute undercover walk.
Overnight: Villa Fontaine Shiodome
Day 2 Monday 10th May Departure Narita – Arrival Fukuoka (/L/D)
Early departure from hotel for Haneda airport for flight to Fukuoka.
First up we will head out for a guided walk to stretch our legs and explore a little of Fukuoka.
Lunch will be at the famous Full Full Hakata [1], very casual but not to be missed.
This afternoon we head to Atsuko-san’s house where we will learn the etiquette of a Japanese tea ceremony and enjoy matcha before our dashi workshop. The workshop will be taken by Atsuko with participation encouraged.

Day 3 Tuesday 11th May Fukuoka. excursion Iizuka (B/L/D)
This morning we travel by train to the rural area of Iizuka.
We will walk along the famous Nagasaki Kaido (the Sugar Road) for about 20 minutes and visit a traditional soy sauce brewery where the next generation is taking the initiative into organic boutique brewing.
Here we will also have the opportunity to meet other artisan producers before returning to Tokyo.
Dinner tonight is at open-air Yatai street food stalls

Day 4 Wednesday 12th May: Fukuoka – Miyajima (B/L)
This morning we will take a train trip to Miyajima and check into our hotel. We will then take a quick 10 minute ferry ride to Miyajima Island. Here we will explore the serene beauty of Miyajima, home to the iconic floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine. Nestled in the tranquil waters of the Seto Inland Sea, this sacred island blends breathtaking natural scenery with rich cultural heritage. Lunch can be taken at your leisure (and taste preference) at one of the many spots preparing the local oysters (or other alternatives).
After lunch wie will hike up the track to the island peak with lovely views, whilst others are welcome to return in the ferry to our hotel or perhaps wander the charming shops in the area.
Dinner tonight is in a local restaurant in Miyajima

Day 5 Thursday 13th May: Miyajima – Hiroshima – Kyoto (B/L/D)
This morning, we journey to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a place of reflection, resilience, and remembrance. We will explore the serene grounds of the Peace Park and visit the Peace Memorial Museum, where powerful exhibits and personal stories offer a moving tribute to those affected by the events of 1945. It is a deeply meaningful experience that honours the past while inspiring hope for a peaceful future.
Lunch today is a regional specialty of okonomiyaki. This afternoon we travel by shinkansen from Hiroshima to Kyoto.
Dinner this evening is a popular Japanese style of Iizakaya, shared plate style dining

Day 6 Friday 14th May: Kyoto (B/L/D
This morning we will head to the famous Nishiki Food market [2]where you will see all sorts of local produce including (I hope) the famous Kyoto furikake seasoning [3].
From here we will head by private bus to Daitoku-ji [4], one of Kyoto’s most revered Zen temple complexes. Our visit includes the lovely Daisen-in [5], renowned for its contemplative rock garden that embodies the essence of Zen philosophy. We also explore Hoshun-in [6], where a delicate collection of bonsai trees reflects centuries of artistry and mindful cultivation. Together, these spaces offer a serene immersion into the spiritual and aesthetic traditions of Japanese Zen culture. Lunch is shojin ryori (buddhist cuisine) at Daitoku-ji temple.
After lunch we will return to our bus and visit the Kinkaku-ji temple (Golden Pavilion).
We will then wander the 5km Philophoser’s Path [7], a serene journey through forested paths and sacred sites. Following in the footsteps of generations past, you’ll pass mossy stone lanterns and quiet temples, immersed in the timeless beauty and spiritual heritage of Japan.

Day 7 Saturday 15th May: Kyoto, excursion Wazuka/Nara (B/L)
This morning, we depart Kyoto for the picturesque countryside of Wazuka r [8]enowned for its lush tea fields, Wazuka offers a peaceful escape where we’ll visit a local tea plantation, enjoy a tasting of its finest brews, and savour a traditional lunch. In the afternoon, we continue by bus and train to Nara. We will explore the historic Nara Park and visit the awe-inspiring Tōdai-ji Temple [9], home to the Great Buddha.
Dinner tonight will be at your leisure in Kyoto, there are so many little hole in the wall places to explore.

Day 8 Sunday 16th May: Kyoto – Kanazawa (B/L/D)
Today, we travel by train to Kanazawa, this afternoon we will hire bikes and explore the city of Kanazawa including the exquisite Kenroku-en Gardens.
Our day concludes with a delightful tempura dinner, highlighting the delicate flavours of seasonal ingredients.

Day 9 Monday 17th May: Kanazawa (B/L/D)
This morning we have a delicious Bento Box making class, creating all the different aspects of a traditional Bento box. This will then become our lunch.
This afternoon is yours to explore Kanazawa or rest as you like.
In the evening, we gather to enjoy a sushi/sashimi dinner, savouring the flavours of the Sea of Japan.

Day 10 Tuesday 18th May: Kanazawa – Matsumoto – Tokyo (B/L/D)
This morning, we depart Kanazawa by train for Matsumoto where we will have a quick visit to the iconic Matsumoto Castle one of Japan’s most beautiful original fortresses. From here we will head to the Ishii miso factory for a tour and a taste of Helen’s favourite miso ice cream.
We continue by train to Hotaka to cycle the quiet roads and visit the picturesque Daio Wasabi Farm, famed for its clear spring waters and serene walking paths. Following our visit, we board the train to Tokyo.
Our dinner tonight will be a lunch box style light dinner on the shinkasen.

Day 11 Wednesday 19th May: Tokyo (B/L/D)
This morning we will leave our hotel early to Ueno Park for a relaxing meditation class.
From here we head off to Kappabashi St where those interested in Japanese chef knives will find the best there is.
Lunch today is at Shogun Burger in Asakusa, you can’t book but from my experience (and I am not necessarily the biggest burger fan), it is worth trying.
After lunch we will take the subway (Ginza line) from Asakusa to Shibuya and see Shibuya Crossing. We will then walk from Shibuya to Harajuku and get a taste of Tokyo life.
Dinner tonight will be a in a casual hole in the wall bar.

Day 12 Thursday 20th May: Tokyo (B/D)
This morning after breakfast we head to Teamlabs Planets. Teamlab is an interactive light installation extravaganza and Planets in particular is excellent. From here it is a quick bus trip to the Tsujiki fish market where amongst other things we can try the famous Japanese souffle pancakes.
Department store foodhalls in Tokyo are extraordinary and we will from the fish market to the food hall at the famous department store Mitsukoshi Ginza [10]. Here you can purchase lunch/snacks at your leisure.
After lunch there will be some free time to browse Ginza.
We can’t leave Japan without a sake tasting and this evening we will meet at in Ueno for a guided introduction to sake and the various styles. This will be followed by dinner.

Day 13 Friday 21st May: Departure Tokyo
Today is yours to do as you please. Shop til you drop or take some time to wander and stretch your legs before flying home.
For those heading to NZ then at late afternoon we will head to Narita for flights to Auckland. Other flights I will work with you on.
