Bread sauce

Place cloves, onion, milk and bay leaf in a saucepan, bring to just below boiling and then simmer for 5 minutes.
Cover, and remove from heat, leave to sit for an hour. Cut off crusts and whiz bread to soft white crumbs in a blender. Measure out 1 cup crumbs. Remove onion, cloves and bay leaf from milk and discard. Heat milk gently, gradually stirring in the crumbs, butter and cream. Cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until sauce is smooth and thick.
